Veterinary technicians play a crucial role in the care of animals. Their main responsibility is to assist veterinarians in their care of animal injury, illness, and development. Veterinary technicians must have a range of skills, from processing X-rays to administering intravenous fluids to animals of all shapes, sizes, and species. They need very specific training and experience to be successful in their field. State governments regulate the field through credentials and licenses. The VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Examination) is an exam created by the private AAVSB (American Association of Veterinary State Boards) based on industry practices and standards. The AAVSB does not credential veterinary technicians, but they work with state regulatory boards to administer the test that is used in licensing.

The test was created by a group of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, educators, and administrators to reflect the best practices of the industry. It is continually revamped to reflect new advances in veterinary medicine. It is a multiple-choice test delivered via a computer platform at select testing centers. It is only available several times a year, so candidates should plan accordingly. There are two hundred twenty-five questions on the exam, though only two hundred will be counted toward the final score. The other questions are being tested for viability on future exams.

There are seven major areas of content knowledge on the exam. Questions about pharmacy and pharmacology concern common medicines used in animal care and treatment. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of surgical preparation and assisting veterinarians during surgery. Animal dentistry is covered, specifically assisting with emergency dental procedures to protect the life and health of an animal. Laboratory procedures, from storing blood samples to sterilizing equipment, are a major focus. Another major section involves animal care and nursing, that is, treating healthy and sick animals while they are conscious. The last two subjects involve technical skills: diagnostic imaging using radiography and other techniques to find injury or illness and anesthesia or using chemicals and compounds to reduce pain and suffering.
