TExES Exam

Of all the teacher credentialing tests in the many states of the union, none is more famous or controversial than the TExES (Texas Examination of Education Standards). The test was developed by the Texas Education Agency's State Board for Educator Certification as a credentialing exam for teachers in its public school system. The curriculum standards in the state are extremely comprehensive and are often used by textbook publishers as a template for primary and secondary education in many states. This fact has caused some degree of consternation from other states over the amount of power the Texas Education Agency has, but it also means that the TExES is a particularly rigorous exam for teachers. On the plus side, there is an abundance of materials available about the curriculum and what teachers are responsible for knowing. For those seeking a teaching credential in Texas, there is an opportunity to familiarize oneself with the contents of the exam.

The Texas teacher certification exam is given in a multiple-choice format. There are versions for every type of credential, from primary school teachers and high school subject teachers to specialists and administrators. Test titles range from ESL Generalist EC-6 to Superintendent to Health Science Technology Education 8-12. Teachers and administrators may take multiple versions of the exam to add to their credentials and move laterally or vertically within the school system.

The comprehensive form of the test can be seen by examining a specific test, the Generalist 4-8. The test is for a teacher of grades four through eight, which encompasses late elementary and middle school. The test covers all of the subjects that a teacher might be asked to teach, substitute, or assist in. Grade-level math and science are covered by a broad spectrum of questions. The social studies section goes through the entire state curriculum, from world history and Texas history to economics and literature. Candidates for the exam would be well advised to research and study the material if only to see how broad the subject areas are.
