Many degree programs need an unbiased assessment of a candidate's potential to achieve future academic success. When they are considering a diverse group of applicants from around the country and internationally, they must sift through various grade reports that have been given using varying standards and criteria. Using standardized tests to determine content knowledge and reasoning skills allows admissions officers to judge students on a level playing field. Along with other educational criteria, admissions officers for certain degree programs use the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) to judge applicants and where they stand within their cohort. Nursing degree programs are the primary client for the TEAS, and candidates for nursing programs should research whether their program requires a TEAS score.
The test has been developed by a private company in conjunction with educators and program administrators. The test covers general knowledge as it is often taken by undergraduates and those without advanced degrees. It tests four broad areas: math, reading, science, and language usage, which basically means English grammar. The test has one hundred seventy multiple-choice questions. The candidate has just less than three and a half hours to complete the exam.
The language usage section focuses largely on written expression. Each question gives a sample sentence or paragraph with one section highlighted. The candidate must determine if the sentence is well crafted and has proper punctuation. He or she is given three suggestions for fixing the section and is allowed a fourth choice to leave it as is. The math section covers a range of basic skills including estimation, ratios, arithmetic, basic geometry, and algebra. The science section focuses largely on the life sciences, specifically biology and anatomy. The reading sections focus on academic articles mirroring the kind that might be encountered in the average degree program. Candidates can improve their scores by researching and practicing with the materials on the test.
