PTCB Test

The PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) is a group of industry professionals who have created a program of certification and licensure that is accepted nationwide. This program includes requirements for education, training, and experience. In addition, they administer a standardized test for pharmacy technician aspirants. The PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) was created using current industry standards and practices. The PTCB partners with state government agencies to provide certification to professionals in the industry. Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, private pharmacies, clinics, and health centers. Pharmacy technicians participate in mixing, filling, labeling, and dispensing prescriptions. Their primary role is to assist pharmacists in all of their duties as they serve their patients.

The PTCE is a computer-based test that takes two hours to complete and is given at private testing centers. There are ninety total questions on the test. The exam tests a candidate's knowledge of professional practices while working in a pharmacy. A majority of the questions involve working with patients in conjunction with a licensed pharmacist. These questions involve filling prescriptions and regulations regarding identification. Another, smaller section of the exam is a cohort of questions about maintaining inventory and handling medications. Questions in this section involve some simple math, especially weights and measures involved in pharmaceuticals. The final section deals with the business aspects of pharmacy work, including management and administration. This includes record keeping issues and maintaining medical histories.

Once participants pass the PTCE, they can go by the designation of CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). The certification must be renewed on a regular basis, which can be accomplished through continuing education. In this way, the government and its private partners, the PTCB, can ensure that professional pharmacy technicians stay up-to-date on industry processes and advances in the field.
