Praxis II Test

The Praxis series of exams is taken by college students and graduates who wish to enter teacher education programs with the goal of becoming primary or secondary educators. The original Praxis was a general test for all teacher degree program candidates. The Praxis II is more specific and gives administrators, students, and teachers a lot of information about a candidate's strengths and weaknesses. The Praxis II tests knowledge of the specific subjects that are taught in kindergarten through twelfth grade, from algebra to physics. The Praxis II is also used for teacher credentialing after a candidate graduates from a degree program.

The Praxis II can still be taken as a paper-based test, although the computer-based test is increasingly common. The length of the test depends upon the subject, but they range from an hour to four hours. Candidates are allowed to take tests in multiple subjects. There are one hundred twenty separate subject exams. Test takers are encouraged to answer as many questions as possible as the final score is based solely on the number of questions one has answered correctly. The final score report includes a score, the passing threshold, a range of possible scores, and percentile information showing a candidate's ranking alongside his or her peers.

The many tests encompass the range of elementary, middle, and high school curriculums in the United States. The tests contain subject assessment subtests. Test takers answer multiple-choice questions and essay prompts about the subject content they deliver to students. American History teachers must answer questions taken from a high school curriculum. There is a subtest on learning in which questions touch on human development and teaching techniques. Questions often present a particular case of a student who is struggling and suggest ways a teacher might remediate and help the student. Finally, there is a subtest about teaching methodologies for a cohort of subjects like language arts as opposed to math.
