NYSTCE Test

New York, like other states, has rigorous standards for their public school teachers. Candidates for teaching positions must first get certified by the state. To do so, they must follow certain educational paths to get degrees in education. Prospective teachers must also take certain classes mandated by the state, many provided in education degree courses within the state. In addition, they must be able to prove a certain amount of experience in the classroom. There are several further requirements that can be found through the New York Department of Education. The final step is a demonstration of mastery of subject matter and teaching standards through taking of the NYSTCE (New York State Teacher Certification Examinations).

There are a variety of tests that fall under the rubric of NYSTCE. There is a test for teaching assistants, multiple exams for classroom teachers and specialists, and even a set of leadership exams for administrators. The tests for classroom teachers include specific versions for elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers. There is a test for bilingual educators and tests for content specialists. Most include both multiple-choice and written portions. Some certifications require a performance component, which is a videotaped exhibition of the candidate teaching a specified lesson.

The content of the test is determined by the state's curriculum and teacher education programs and through consultation with teachers and teacher trainers. The general exams for elementary, middle, and secondary educators contain content from the curriculum they will teach. Math, language arts, and social studies are covered. In addition, there are questions that concern pedagogy. Elementary teachers are asked about child development at the ages they teach. Secondary teachers are asked about the learning differences that high school students grapple with and how to teach classes to encompass those different learning styles.
