Nursing Test

Nurses perform an increasing number of medical functions at their places of work. They provide treatment to patients in hospitals and other institutions. They run tests and operate medical equipment. They also educate their patients to care for themselves and improve their overall health. In addition, they are responsible for keeping records of patients' medical histories. Nurses must have a unique educational background and lots of practical experience. States license nurses to ensure that they meet the requirements of the job. The nursing exam is one part of certification in all fifty states.

One exam administered nationally is the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses). The exam is computer adaptive, meaning that the computer changes the test as the exam is being taken. No two tests are alike, obviating the opportunity for cheating. In addition, it tailors the exam to the learning style of each candidate, making questions easier or harder as necessary. For the most competent test takers, this can mean that the exam will take only a short time as they answer the most difficult questions quickly and efficiently.

The content of the exam has been carefully constructed by the NCSBN (National Council of States Boards of Nursing), and covers material taught in nursing colleges. One section of the exam deals with the care environment. Questions concern the prevention of infection and the management of care. The second section covers health promotion and maintenance. These questions deal with training patients to prevent illness and injury. The major portion of the exam is on psychosocial and physiological integrity. These topics include the basic care and comfort of individual patients. There are questions about therapies for patients, including pharmaceuticals and parenteral therapies, which means injections. Questions cover finding a vein and the administration of parenteral nutrition. Questions also cover risk management, including reducing risks of relapse and infection.
