NPTE Test

Physical therapists and their assistants work with a very vulnerable clientele. They are the medical professionals who help patients through rehabilitation and recovery following accidents or other physical traumas. They often work with vulnerable groups like the elderly and the physically impaired. They must develop courses of treatment to help people recover their ability to move, reduce pain, and strengthen atrophied muscles. Untrained therapists could do more harm than good. Because of the nature of the work and the vulnerability of the patients in question, states certify therapists to ensure they have current knowledge, sufficient training, and professional standards. The NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination) is a standardized test that must be passed, in addition to providing proof of education requirements, to achieve certification.

The NPTE was created by the FSBPT (Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy), an umbrella organization of licensing boards encompassing all fifty states. It was originally crafted by professional physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and educators to reflect the best practices of the industry. It is regularly updated to reflect current knowledge and advancements in the industry. There is a set of questions designed to test a candidate's general knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Questions focus on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. There are questions about the diagnosis of illness and trauma. Then there are questions about treatment. Candidates must know about the proper use of equipment and the therapies available to them. They must also answer questions about their professional roles as advocates, teachers, and therapists. They must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the rules and regulations circumscribing their conduct.

Different states have different rules regarding failure of the exam. Most states allow candidates to take the exam three times in a twelve-month period. Requirements for certification also vary depending on jurisdiction.
