NP Test

There are a number of paths available to nurses seeking an NP (Nurse Practitioner) credential. Registered nurses that have completed a degree program may be eligible to become nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners function as advance medical professionals with extra education in diagnosing and treating illness and injury. They are empowered to prescribe medicines and make referrals to other physicians and specialists. NPs usually specialize in an area of health care, including family health, pediatric issues, geriatric care, women's health, neonatal care, or mental health. NPs are licensed by the state and must pass a standardized exam.

The NP exam allows candidates to take a standardized test in a specialty to prove competency before receiving certification. The content of the exams is based on criteria collected from practicing nurse practitioners, academics, and administrators in the industry. There are five content areas for each exam. For the Family NP exam, for instance, test takers answer questions on nursing practice, health care policy, clinical assessment, clinical management, and an NP's professional role. The test is weighted more toward the specific functions of an NP in practice. There are questions about the organs and systems of the human body, including endocrine, respiratory, circulatory, and cardiovascular treatments. The diagnoses and treatment of disease and trauma are tested. Communication and reporting are covered. The test has questions about social, gender, and cultural issues ranging from physical abuse and depression to substance abuse and codependency. There are questions about insurance coverage and confidentiality issues.

All states require each NP to go through a rigorous licensing process. The certification exam is a small part of the overall process. Candidates for licensing must give proof of education and experience. Once a license has been obtained, it must be continually updated. NPs must demonstrate their commitment by continuing their education and keeping abreast of advancements in their field.
