NCE Test

The NCE (National Counselor Exam) is a standardized, nationally administered exam used for licensure and certification. It is recognized by most states in their credentialing processes for counselors are medical health professionals. They must go through a rigorous regimen of education and training. Counselors work with individual clients who are in crisis. Their crises may be due to mental health problems or caused by life difficulties from death to addiction. Although there are numerous counseling specialties, there is a single exam that each counselor takes for his or her license.

The NCE was created by the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors), a nonprofit association of counselors versed in industry standards and practices. The NCE is a paper-based test. There are two hundred multiple-choice questions that students answer on a computer-graded bubble matrix, although only one hundred sixty questions count in the final score. Candidates have four hours to complete the test. The test's makeup is based on content knowledge and professional standards. Content areas include human development and behavior, social and cultural contexts, and career development. There are questions about professional processes like group counseling, assessment, and intervention. There are also questions about professional behavior covering ethics and current research. A passing score is determined by a point cutoff, not a curve, meaning that there is no limit to the number of candidates who can pass the exam.

There are other criteria for licensure in addition to passing the NCE. States create their own requirements, so they vary from area to area. Most require a counselor to carry a degree, such as a master's degree in counseling. These programs should give candidates the specific knowledge they need to pass the NCE, although classes and self-study programs are available to those taking the exam imminently. Many states also have experience requirements. Candidates might need to spend a number of years working under licensed counselors in mental health settings.
