DANB Exam

The DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) is a private, nonprofit association that credentials professional dental assistants and other dental workers. They give exams to aspiring dental workers in order to test their knowledge and education of industry standards. Dental assistants play a vital role in the promotion of dental health and the administration of dental care. They are responsible for providing medical services from polishing teeth and removing sutures to taking X-rays and dental impressions. They are also responsible for administrative duties, like taking appointments and doing some light accounting. A credential guarantees that assistants are properly trained and aware of current standards and practices.

The CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) exam is a set of tests that lead to credentialing by the DANB. They also have exams for orthodontic assistants and for radiation health and safety for X-ray technicians and others using X-ray equipment. The CDA exam is made up of three portions, all of which must be passed before certification is achieved. There is a GC (General Chairside), an RHS (Radiation Health and Safety), and an ICE (Infection Control Exam) exam.

The GCE is made up of one hundred twenty multiple-choice questions. This exam focuses on the tolls, processes, and skills necessary in assisting dentists and specialists as they have a patient in the chair. The ICE focuses on the cleaning techniques and training skills of dental assistants who are responsible for keeping tools clean, sterilized, and ready. The RHS exam covers the basics of radiography as many dental assistants are responsible for taking X-rays of patients and must do so with their patients' and their own safety in mind. The DANB credential is accepted in most states, but some states have more onerous requirements or have their own tests that dental assistants must pass. Dental assistant candidates should check which exams are the most appropriate for them.
