The CSP (Certified Safety Professional) is a credential that exhibits a professional safety worker's experience and education to clients. It can improve the likelihood of employment for safety engineers and is recognized by both private and public employers. Safety engineers work in the field of industrial engineering. They try to ensure that few accidental deaths or injuries occur due to the poor design of equipment, implementation of plans, or distribution of workers. They work with engineers in all aspects of planning and implementing projects.
There are two components of the exam that precede CSP certification: Safety Fundamentals and Comprehensive Practice. The Safety Fundamentals portion is broken down into four domains of general safety knowledge. The first is recognizing hazards in the environment and in the workplace. These include chemical and natural hazards as well as human-made problems, like ergonomic threats and worker-caused hazards. The second section covers controlling dangerous environments and behaviors. These questions include how to prevent contact with dangerous materials and how to administer workers to improve their safety. There is a section on training involving questions about teaching managers, workers, and other safety engineers how to recognize and control hazards. The final section of the Safety Fundamentals test is on the business side of the industry. Questions probe a candidate's knowledge of how to balance safety issues with costs and other financial constraints.
The Comprehensive Practice section is a bit different. It deals with how safety professionals work in real-world situations and workplaces. The domains cover similar topics, like identifying hazards and training others to improve safety. The questions are more work specific. They deal with how safety professionals report hazards on a work site and how they communicate these hazards with their coworkers and the appropriate government regulatory agencies. They cover all the tools at a safety professional's disposal, including how to interview workers and when to report a hazard to an appropriate agency.
