CPHQ Exam

CPHQ stands for Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality. It is a voluntary credential, meaning that it is not required by government recommendation, but it is widely accepted in the professional ranks as a symbol of rigorous training. Healthcare quality workers monitor safety procedures at healthcare facilities that affect both patients and workers. They examine mortality rates to try and find causal links. They work with hospital staff, pharmaceutical representatives, and administrators to improve outcomes for all patients. Hospitals and insurers hire safety professionals to lower costs, train staff, and provide risk management.

The CPHQ exam is a large part of the credentialing process. It is a standardized exam designed to bring some uniformity to the development of standards and the industry and to measure the knowledge of individual candidates. The certification lasts for two years, while recertification involves other requirements, like continuing education. This rule dictates that certified professionals will be kept up-to-date on the latest advancements in their field. Certified workers have proof of training and experience that they can display to prospective employers.

The exam itself is a computer-based test. It is comprised of more than 125 multiple-choice questions, although the score is based on 125. Candidates are given three hours to complete the exam. Only correct answers count toward the final score, so guesses are not penalized. The test has questions in four key competencies of the profession. Questions are asked about management and leadership. These questions monitor a candidate's ability to form oversight groups or to determine the costs and benefits of safety programs. Other questions are about information management test knowledge, keeping medical records, and the analysis of data and statistics. Questions about performance measurement and improvement explore a test taker's ability to train other staff and administer education programs. The final component is patient safety, where issues of risk management are explored fully.
