Cosmetology is the field of grooming others to look their best. Cosmetology encompasses many professions, including hairstylists and professional makeup artists. There are cosmetologists who work for individual customers and those who work for photographers or movie and theatrical productions. Cosmetologists are responsible for cutting and coloring hair. They also help clients with nail grooming, including manicures and pedicures, and makeup application.
The field of cosmetology also includes the job title of esthetician. Estheticians focus on skin care through removal of unwanted hair, cleaning of dead or dry skin, and the application of makeup. Licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are sought after as they have demonstrated knowledge of industry standards and practices through testing and training.
The cosmetology exam is standardized and used in various states to license professional cosmetologists. The exam has several content areas: physiology and anatomy, trichology, chemistry, hairstyling and cutting, nail care, and skin issues. The questions on each section are geared toward the specific knowledge needed by cosmetologists and estheticians. For instance, anatomy questions often focus on the epidermis and its nerve cells as cosmetologists must be aware of how scalps and skin are damaged so they can intervene and bring skin back to health. Many of the questions are specific to the professional tools and processes involved in styling and treating hair. There are a slew of questions based on experience and work training.
The exam itself is necessary but not sufficient for certification. Most states also have an education requirement, necessitating candidates to graduate from a licensed school of cosmetology. Such schools give candidates the academic knowledge necessary to pass the licensure exam. There are also courses and programs of self-study for people taking the exams that have been proven to raise scores. Licensed cosmetologists are going to face improved career prospects and command larger lifetime earnings than their unlicensed peers.
