CHST Exam

The CHST certification is a program designed for Construction Health and Safety Technicians, hence the acronym CHST. Successful candidates will find careers in the construction industry open to them. CHST holders inspect and manage safety issues on construction sites. They work within the framework of government regulations and best practices to ensure that the health and safety of workers comes first. Safety professionals are employed by property owners, contractors, large companies, and the government. Certification shows that the candidate in question is aware of current rules and regulations and is working within a framework approved by his or her peers. It can increase a client base as most reputable builders work only with certified professionals.

In order to take the exam for certification, applicants must display some experience with safety issues in the construction industry on top of a high school degree or GED. This experience can be gained through college credit or by working in construction for several years and demonstrating responsibility for safety issues. Once eligibility for the exam has been established, candidates can focus on the exam itself.

The exam is broken down into four components. The first is program management. In this section of the exam, test takers must exhibit knowledge of examining contracts for possible safety issues. They must be able to set up a safety milieu that is specific to the type of construction that is happening on a given site. The second component of the CHST is work site auditing. This section has questions about analyzing work sites for safety issues and remediating these problems. The third section deals with training. In this section, questions cover the ability of the candidate to train workers and management in how to protect themselves and others. The final section covers a safety specialist's professional responsibilities. These include reporting work site accidents and dealing with regulatory agencies like OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
