The Accuplacer exam was recently developed by the College Board to complement other standardized tests, such as the SAT. This exam displays a student's proficiency at a variety of core academic skills. It is administered at universities and community colleges to matriculating students to help place them in appropriate courses. It allows counselors, advisors, and students to identify holes in a student's precollege education and also to choose a suitable curriculum to meet the student's future educational goals.
The test itself is computer-based and adjusts its difficulty level as each question is answered. This means that answering a question correctly will get the student a more difficult question, while answering incorrectly will lead to an easier question being given. Students encounter the same number of questions, more or less, but they will be placed at different levels depending on the difficulty of the questions they answered. This kind of exam is called adaptive.
The Accuplacer exam is not dissimilar to other standardized tests given by the College Board. The language portion has a few types of multiple-choice questions. One type is sentence correction, which gives you a sample sentence with a portion underlined. There are then four choices to replace the underlined portion. The first option is the same as the example, meaning that no correction is necessary. The other three choices change the sentence grammatically. There are also reading comprehension questions similar to what one might find on an SAT exam.
There is also a math portion of the Accuplacer test. These questions test a candidate's knowledge of both arithmetic and algebra, the two types of mathematics used in a range of college courses from accounting to computer engineering. Additionally, there is an optional essay that measures a student's writing ability. There is a separate Accuplacer ESL (English as a Second Language) exam for students, whose native language is not English, preparing to transition into a university in the United States.
